PHILADELPHIA, P.A. -- The Atlanta Braves (1-0) may be the team to beat in the National League East after last nights win over the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies (0-1) 4-1.
The celebration is over in "The City of Brotherly Love” and the Braves new ace in the lineup, Derek Lowe, made that noticeable after throwing a two-hitter in eight innings of pitching. Lowe's debut was phenomenal allowing no walks in a prolific performance.
Lowe finished with six 1-2-3 innings. The Phillies' (0-1) only run was given up by Braves closer Mike Gonzalez in the bottom of the ninth inning to Eric Bruntlett.
The Braves were led by a 2-run home run by Brian McCann in the first inning and two solo shots in the second. Jeff Francoeur and rookie center fielder Jordan Schafer hit the solo shots. Schafer hit his first home run as a Major Leaguer in his first at-bat. The lefty became just the 99th player to ever accomplish that spectacular statistic.
Opening night was everything it ought to be. Good hits, superior pitching and fielding, and a sight of enjoyment.
The Braves Phils series will continue tomorrow night in Philadelphia. First pitch will be thrown out at 7:05 p.m. ET. There is no question that the Braves outstanding performance last night made them look like they could compete in, what seemed to be, a two team race.
