Swatting The Nats Away

A 2-hour-2-minute rain delay did not stop Kelly Johnson from breaking loose as the Atlanta Braves (3-1) won in extra innings Friday night. It was the Braves 2009 home opener at Turner Field that nearly took six hours to complete. The Braves (3-1) pleased the fans by winning a grudge match 6-5 over the Washington Nationals (0-4) in the 10th inning. Johnson drove in rookie, center fielder Jordan Schafer.

The winning run may have came at 1:26 a.m., but Brave's Johnson told reporters after the game, "If you're going to stay here until 1:30 you might as well win it."

Schafer led off the 10th inning by hitting a single off the mound, then moved to second off a Omar Ifante groundout. Eventually, the sensational rookie scored off of Johnon's hit to give the Braves their third win of the early baseball season.

Washington's starting pitcher, Sharion Martis, gave up five hits and three runs in just three innings. The good news for Martis, he got his first Major League hit.

The Nationals (0-4), trailed 4-1 during the delay but then came charging back with three runs in the sixth to tie it up. Therefore, showing the Brave's lack of bullpen, which could not hold off a 10-3 lead against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. The Phils rallied back to win 12-11.

The Braves (3-1) will remain at Turner Field for the weekend to finish out a short three game series verse the winless Nats.
